New Technology Transforms 3D Printing

New Technology Transforms 3D Printing New Technology Transforms 3D Printing New Technology Transforms 3D PrintingWe have all heard of 3D printing by now. This revolutionary process continues to develop and get better, including larger sizes, faster speeds, and sometimes even production-ready partes. But 3D printed parts can still have quality issues, especially with inconsistent mechanical properties.A new technology that has recently hit the market promises to be even more disruptive than 3D printingCarbon3Ds CLIP technology. Short for continuous liquid interface production, CLIP is a photochemical process that actually pulls a complete, solid product from a melt of plastic material, with mechanical properties, resolution, and surface finishes that are very similar to injection-molded parts.Carbon3D is a Redwood City, California-based start-up. The company announced its CLIP technology in 2015 and unveiled its commercial CLIP-based additive manufacturing machinethe M1in April 2016.H ow It WorksCLIP is a variation of the stereolithography process that uses light and oxygen to rapidly produce objects from a pool of resin. It essentially grows solid structures out of a liquid bath. We have been able to demonstrate the continuous generation of monolithic polymeric parts up to tens of centimeters in size with feature resolution below 100 micrometers, says Alexander Ermoshkin, CTO and co-founder of Carbon3D. Continuous liquid interface production process. Image Carbon3DThe key to the process is the creation of an oxygen-containing dead zone between the solid part and the liquid precursor where solidification cannot occur. The dead zone is only a few tens of micrometers thick. A continuous sequence of UV images is fired from a digital light-processing imaging unit in a precise pattern dictated by the objects 3D file. Above the dead zone, the curing part is continuously drawn out of the resin bath, thereby creating suction forces that constantly renew reactive liquid r esin.Continuous liquid interface production is achieved with an oxygen-permeable window below the ultraviolet image projection plane, which creates the dead zone where photopolymerization is inhibited between the window and the polymerizing part, continues Ermoshkin. Complex solid parts can be drawn out of the resin at rates of hundreds of millimeters per hour. These print speeds allow parts to be produced in minutes instead of hours. The part is then subjected to a secondary thermal curing process that sets off a secondary chemical reaction that strengthens the materials, resulting in high-resolution parts with engineering-grade mechanical properties. Parts can be made from seven proprietary resins, including rigid polyurethane, flexible polyurethane, elastomeric polyurethane, and cyanate ester. These incorporate UV-blockers and pigments to protect them from light degradation.M1 3D printer. Image Carbon3DOver the last year, Carbon3D has been working with selected customers in a vari ety of industries, such as automotive, aerospace, medical, and athletic apparel. Companies include Delphi, a high-tech manufacturing firm in Warren, Ohio, that makes parts for several industries, including automotive and electronics. Delphi sees great potential in the CLIP processnot only for improving operational efficiencies, shortening prototyping and production timelines, and saving money, but also the opportunity to expand konzept options.Engineers can start to redesign parts from the ground up, without being constrained by the design rules associated with traditional manufacturing technologies, says Jerry Rhinehart, Delphis manager of additive manufacturing development. They can consider lighter weight parts using internal mesh structures, single assembly parts that will better address sealing needs and reduce overall complexity of product assembly, and ultimately decrease part and product failure modes because of this new design freedom. Were excited to unveil our M1 machine a nd ground-breaking materials, adds Joseph DeSimone, CEO and co-founder of Carbon3D. This technology lays the groundwork for addressing major gaps in additive manufacturing as we work with our customers to continually innovate and push the boundaries of product design and production.Mark Crawford is an independent writer.Learn more about the latest technologies in 3D printing at ASMEs AM3D Conference Expo.Complex solid parts can be drawn out of the resin at rates of hundreds of millimeters per hour. Drone Pilots Could Be the Next Hot Career

Drone Pilots Could Be the Next Hot Career Drone Pilots Could Be the Next Hot Career Thats right those small aircraft that have become a boom business for real estate companies, utilities, and other organizations that need eyes in the sky need pilots to fly them pilots that are well trained and, apparently, well compensated.According to a CNNMoney report (via HartfordBusiness.com), Big companies, such as Amazon and Facebook, are looking for pilots who fly drones and engineers with experience in building the unmanned aircraft. And they are willing to pay top dollar for the right stuff. The Washington Post says there are public sector employers flying drones. Police and sheriffs departments in Queens Annes County, Md. Arlington, Tex. Mesa County, Colo. and Miami-Dade County, Fla., have already started experimenting with unmanned aircraft for fire fighting, photography and other uses.Echoing what CNNMoney reports, the Post says, Facebook is reportedly in talks to buy Titan Aerospace, a drone production company that is developing solar-powered atmospheric satellites that could bring Web access to parts of the world with limited world wide web connections.Once drones are cleared for takeoff which should happenwithin the next year hiring is expected to explode. CNNMoney says, As many as 100,000 new jobs will be created in the first 10 years after unmanned aircraft are cleared for takeoff in U.S. airspace, according to a 2013 report from the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International. Those will be high-paying jobs, too, CNNMoney says Large employers are already paying up for drone pilots about $50 an hour, or over $100,000 a year according to Al Palmer, director of the center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems at the University of North Dakota. Palmer expects the drone industry to grow exponentially as companies discover new uses for drones.Northrop Grumman Corporation and the University of North Dakota signed a cooperative agreement to offer unmanned airc raft system (UAS) pilot training to domestic and global customers using SandShark, a remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) trainer. Pilots fly the aircraft from anywhere in the country through a commercial broadband Internet connection or 4G cellular network. That means pilots-in-training have no need to relocate to North Dakota (even though it has a good job market, thanks to fracking). The agreement also facilitates new career development programs and employment opportunities for students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines and aviation programs.CNNMoneyreported earlier this month about Amazons hiring of drone pilots. Amazon is looking for engineers to help test and develop Prime Air, its drone delivery service, the report said. According to the job posting, candidates should have at least five years of experience flying drones. It helps if you can fly actual airplanes. The company lists a pilots certificate among the preferred qualifications for the job.CNNMoney also said, Amazon is also looking for candidates who are knowledgeable about laws governing the use of unmanned aircraft. Were looking for aerospace, systems, or other engineers with extensive UAS flight experience, and preferably experience in working with authorities on UAS certification, the job description states. Not surprisingly, law firms are stepping up to understand and interpret drone laws. The Washington Post also reported, Banking on the fact that drones will become more mainstream in commercial and private use, two major U.S. law firms announced that they are starting drone practice groups - Richmond-based LeClairRyan and Atlanta-based McKenna Long Aldridge.LeClairRyan and McKenna Long are looking to expand their work representing companies that design, manufacture, and operate drones in shaping the upcoming FAA regulations, as well as guiding companies through the FAA certification process. The FAA must certify any aircraft, manned or unmanned, that goes into the sky, and anyone who wants to operate a vehicle has to go through an application process.

5 office holiday party stories that will make you cringe

5 office holiday party stories that will make you cringe5 office holiday party stories that will make you cringeOffice holiday parties can be a fun time for coworkers to get to know each otzu sich mora personally without having to talk deadlines or budgets or clients. They can be the perfect place to celebrate the holidays together while unwinding a bit away from the stresses of the office. However, theres sometimes that one coworker who drinks a little too much, makes a fool of themselves on the dance floor, overshares aboutsomething or worse.Because its that time of year again, five women shared their most cringeworthyholiday partystories with Fairygodboss. Maybe we should all take some mental notes, so history doesnt repeat itself.1. Misogynistic mayhemIn a past role, I worked for a national company that welches fairly well known to be misogynistic and a generally negative place to work (think sales reps ripping out the carpet from their peers just to score a sale and the commissi on), says Jessica T., a marketing expert. Every year they threw two big parties, one of which was a holiday party. The structure of the party was such that a large nachhall was rented by multiple companies, and the costs of the event were split as such. It had all the makings of a sh*t show, and it did not disappoint.Employees pre-drank for this party. It was broadcasted and common knowledge that this was the habits for employees for parties. But I didnt expect the owners of the company to do the same, eventually showing up absolutely three sheets to the wind. We also didnt expect his dates (I recall there being a few). They didnt work for the company, and again, it was common knowledge on the professional nature of the dates that often accompanied him to these events. It was beyond cringy. I left that company for a multitude of reasons, not least of which for it being an extremely negative place to work for women and men.2. Inebriated injuriesAt my companys holiday party last year, one of my coworkers got so drunk he was doing high-kicks in the middle of the bar, says Erin, afinancial analyst. It was pretty funny at first, if Im honest. But then he kicked so high he actually ripped his suit pants and threw himself flat on his back. He ended up having to miss work the next few days because he had pulled so many muscles in his legs and actually broke his wrist landing. We all just watched, totally cringing.3. Obliterated oversharesI had one colleague (who no longer works for the company) get so drunk at a holiday party one year that she told everyone just how much she actually hated her job, says Shyanne, a fitness trainer. She was a trainer, too, and she went around telling everyone how much she hates the fitness center we work at and basically made fun of all of her clients. She even fat-shamed a few of them. It was like the more she had to drink, the more brutally critical she became. A few of us were just listening to her go on, wondering when shed catch on a bout howawkwardthe conversation was becoming. Were all a tight-knit family at the gym, so it kind of came out of nowhere. I think she felt awkward enough the morning after that she ended up quitting her job a few weeks after that.4. Wardrobe malfunctionsAt my companys holiday party two years ago I wore a flowy black dress that was a just above the knee, says Becky, a real estate broker. I went to the bathroom, and when I came out, my dress had gotten tucked into the Spanx. I was ordering another drink at the bar, without realizing, when my boss came up to me to let me know that my granny panties were showing. Not only was it incredibly inappropriate for him to be the one to tell me, but I was also just mortified. It must have been 10 minutes before he said anything, and I have no idea who else noticed. Cringe.5. Fighting during festivitiesMy boyfriend came with me to my holiday party last year, but I was prettynervousto bring him along because he knew a lot about one of my male coll eagues at work who I couldnt stand - hed always make sexual innuendo jokes and make the women in the office feel really uncomfortable, says Lara, a software developer.Well, enough drinks in, this coworker was at it again. This time he came over and shook my boyfriends hand and made a comment about how my boyfriend scored with me. My boyfriend shook it off and just agreed. But as the night went on, he kept making comments about the skirts I wear to work and that my emails are sometimes flirtatious (theyre not), as if to get under his skin. Eventually, he and my boyfriend went at it and got in an ugly fight in the middle of the party. I was so embarrassed, angry and upset. I felt even more uncomfortable around him in the office the next morning. The worst part is that he still works with me.AnnaMarie Houlis is a feminist, a freelance journalist and an adventure aficionado with an affinity for impulsive solotravel.
